Founded and directed by Maria
Jameau, The Bija Children’s Choir of Sonoma County, California performs folk and
classic repertoire from many of the rich cultural traditions of the world.
Through this joyful ensemble experience, participants have the opportunity to
develop their musicality by refining their sense of pitch, enhancing their
rhythmic vitality, and developing their inner ear for hearing and singing
harmony. As well, choir members learn to sing in different languages and read
musical notation. Bija is a Sanskrit word meaning “seed of creation,” which
represents the choir’s mission of sowing community, appreciation and
compassion for others, while at the same time cultivating a high quality,
vibrant performance environment for young people who love to sing.
